The woman’s paternal uncles Balbir Singh and Baljit Singh and maternal uncles Jagtar Singh and Sakkater Singh were arrested within days after the case was registered on October 5. Lakhbir Singh, her father, had then absconded.

The family killed Paramjeet Kaur, 20, after she declined to end her love affair with fellow villager Shemsher Singh, Batala senior superintendent of police (SSP) Inderbir Singh has said. “Based on a secret input that Lakhbir was back at his village, a team led by Shri Hargobindpur station house officer (SHO) Kamalmeet Singh laid a trap at Kiri Afghana on Tuesday and caught the prime accused fleeing,” he added.

Bhet Pattan, where the police had fished the body, is under Harchowal police post in Sri Hargobindpur police jurisdiction. The police claim to have found that the family of Paramjeet Kaur had planned to murder even her lover, Shemsher Singh.
