To add to the recreational facilities for inmates at the Patiala jail, the jail authorities have put up a screen in the prison, where they will run films using a projector.
In the inaugural show on Monday, ‘Chaar Sahibzaade’, an animation film on Sikh history, was screened at a special hall created for the purpose.
ADGP (prisons) Rajpal Meena, along with jail officials and inmates, saw the first show.
A committee of jail inmates has been formed to select the films, and it has selected V Shantaram’s classic ‘Do Aankhen Barah Haath’ as the next one to be screened.
There will be no tickets for the film, but the inmates will have to pay to get eatables from the makeshift canteen during the interval.
A hall has been given the shape of a cinema hall where movies will be run through a projector on a screen put up on the wall.
Meena said the project had been started with a view to providing moral education besides recreation. “We will take a feedback after three months, and in case it is encouraging, the idea would be replicated in all Punjab jails,” he said, adding that the inmates had lauded the effort.

He said the committee of jail inmates would decide the films that were inspirational, rich on humour and had a social message, and the jail authorities would get those films. He said there would be separate shows for women inmates.
DSP (jails) Rajan Kapoor said every day, around 200 inmates would watch the film in three shows and it would take at least 10 days to cover all inmates, and it would be then that the film would be changed.
