Five killed as jeep rams into truck

Five persons, including four women, were killed when the jeep they were travelling in rammed into a stationary truck on the national highway near Kalyanpur village on Saturday.

Five persons, including four women, were killed when the jeep they were travelling in rammed into a stationary truck on the national highway near Kalyanpur village on Saturday.

The incident took place at around 6.15am when the victims were on the way to Kiratpur Sahib from Salempur village, Jagraon tehsil, Ludhiana, to immerse the ashes of a relative, Harnek Singh, in the Sutlej river at Gurdwara Patalpuri Sahib.

The deceased have been identified as jeep driver Amanpreet Singh, 25, and his mother Kulvir Kaur, 55, both residents of Hathoor in Jagraon tehsil of Ludhiana district, Dalvinder Kaur, 55, and Sukhdev Kaur, 67, residents of Salempura village, Jagraon, and Sharanjit Kaur, 57, of Mukh Kalan village.

The collision was so severe that the jeep was badly damaged and the bodies of the deceased were taken out from the jeep with great difficulty.

A case has been registered against truck driver Sham Lal of Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh, in this regard.
