The deceased have been identified as Gurdial Singh, 55; his wife, Vimla Rani, 50; sons Harjinder Singh, 25, and Ramesh, 22; and granddaughter Aarti, 13. Gurdial’s daughter Sunita Rani, 30, suffered serious injuries in the accident and is battling for her life at the Kotkapura civil hospital.

The family was on its way to Faridkot early in the morning when the Swift Dzire car they were travelling in rammed into a tree at Kotkapura, 12 km from the town. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Harjinder was driving the car. The impact was so strong that the vehicle swirled and landed in the nearby fields.

Gurdial’s brother Baggan Singh said the family was visiting the town to pay homage at the shrine of Baba Farid and meet a local family for Harjinder’s marriage.
