A 26-year old woman, a contractual teacher in a government elementary school in Kapurthala district, suffered burns on her face when a former colleague threw acid on her on Tuesday, reportedly after rejection of his marriage proposal.
The victim, a resident of Talwandi Mehma village, 3 km from Kapurthala, was proceeding to her school in Topkhana village, on a scooter on Tuesday morning when accused Paramjeet Singh (28) came on a motorcycle and threw acid on her.
The accused, a resident of nearby Kheda Dona village, fled from the spot immediately after committing the crime.
Kapurthala SSP Dhanpreet Kaur said that the teacher sustained 40% burns and was admitted to the Kapurthala civil hospital.
A case under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapon) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC has been registered against the accused.
According to available information, the victim and the accused were employed under ‘Parho Punjab’, a programme run under the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), a few years ago in Kapurthala district on contract basis. However, the woman later got a job as inclusive education volunteer under SSA at the government elementary school, Topkhana, but the accused remained unemployed. Meanwhile, the accused got married to another girl and the couple had two children.
SSP Dhanpreet Kaur said a few months ago, the victim had sent a written complaint to the police through post about the accused’s repeated interference in her life. Acting upon her complaint, the police had called the accused and his family at the police station. The accused apologised for his behaviour and the issue was settled, she added.

{{/usCountry}}The SSP asked the district administration to release funds for the treatment of the victim as the government has announced free treatment of acid victims. Thereafter, an amount of Rs 50,000 was given for her treatment from the Red Cross fund.
