Former Patiala mayor in hiding, SIT at work
With the special investigation team (SIT) formed by the chief minister beginning its work in the Parampreet Kaur (29) murder case, the victim's father-in-law, beleaguered former mayor of city Jaspal Singh Pardhan, has gone underground.
The SIT has won a couple of days from court to interrogate two other suspects, Harpreet Singh, victim's husband; and Paramjit Kaur, victim's mother-in-law.
Inspector general of police Shashi Pradbha Dewadi, deputy inspector general RK Jaiswal, and superintendent of police Balbir Singh, who are on the SIT, inspected the crime scene and had detailed discussion with the members of the family before recording their statements. They look for the motive and Parampreet's strangler.
The parents of the victim have asked for the DNA examination of Jaspal to prove that he had a son from Paramjit Kaur. "Jaspal has lied. He was father-in-law of Parampreet. His political clout and backing gave the courage to the other suspects to plan and commit the crime. The three are hand in glove, so the police should include charges of conspiracy to the first-information report," said Amarjit Singh Sodhi, father of the victim.
On Tuesday, the SIT produced two suspects in the court of the chief judicial magistrate and got two days to interrogate them in custody. For the second consecutive day, former mayor Jaspal Singh remained underground, amid rumors that he would surrender in court.
The police are keeping a vigil over his house and possible hideouts.
