A power engineer from the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) submitted an application to the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) for announcement of revision in power tariff.

The announcement, which was due March 31, 2014, was delayed due to the Lok Sabha polls. The Punjab government had not responded to the PSERC about power subsidy which has led to the delay.

Citing inordinate delay by the PSERC in announcing the revised power tariff for 2013-14, a retired PSPCL power engineer Gurnek Singh said the tariff order, which was to be issued by March 31, 2014, was yet to be announced.

He said that the recovery of arrears resulting from the tariff hike starting April 2014 had also been held up due to this delay. Adding that the subsequent collection of the accumulated arrears would be a shock to consumers, he highlighted that the tariff order be issued at the earliest to minimise the shock.

In helping the consumers the PSERC must allow payment of arrears in three monthly installments, Singh said.

Saying that the Punjab government had announced `5,300 for power subsidy in the budget, Singh added that the PSERC should consider this figure and arrive at the tariff at the earliest.
