The deceased's brother, Virender Singh, in his complaint, said Suresh suspected that village sarpanch Urmila Devi indulged in corrupt practices while undertaking development projects in the village. His brother had sought information under the RTI Act to get to the bottom of matter, Virender said.

Devi's husband Jitender Singh is among the nine accused and have been booked under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). "Efforts are being made to arrest the remaining accused," station house officer (SHO) Ramesh Kumar said.

The complainant alleged that the accused overpowered Suresh near the village on Saturday and beat him up with iron rods and sticks that proved fatal. The deceased's relatives placed the body on the Mahendergarh-Dadri road and blocked traffic for three hours.
