Sunaina was about 16 when assaulted and killed on November 10, 2009. Her half-brunt body was dumped at a secluded place in Nahla village near here. She was in Class 9 at a government girls' school in Jalandhar.

Last Monday, the Punjab and Haryana high court had summoned director general of police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini after a writ petition by the victim's mother, Manjit Kaur, for transfer of case to an officer above the rank of superintendent of police, preferably a woman.

On July 3, on the directions of the DGP, the police formed a special investigation team (SIT) that took just five days to arrest four people in connection with the crime.

Rohit, Ramesh Kumar, Jasdeep Billa, and Sandeep Singh are the suspects under arrest. Suspect Bhima was arrested two days ago. The five had been rounded up soon after the crime as well, but released for lack of evidence then.

When asked why the police delayed the arrest of accused, the DCP said they were collecting evidence.
