The police have registered a criminal case against four people, including a couple from Jalandhar district, for defrauding 10 youths of Rs 90 lakh on an assurance of sending them abroad.
Harnek Singh of Indergarh village in Moga district and nine others, in a complaint to the senior superintendent of police, had alleged that travel agents Om Parkash, his wife Meenakshi and two other residents of Nanakpura area in Jalandhar duped them of Rs 90 lakh on the promise of sending them to Canada.
Assistant sub-inspector at Dharamkot police station, Pritam Singh said the travel agents had also taken passports and other necessary documents from the youths.
The Moga senior superintendent of police had ordered police officials to further investigate the matter.
“During the investigation, the police found that Harnek Singh, Amandeep Singh, Kulbir Singh, Harjinder Singh, Bachittar Singh and Jagsir Singh, all residents of Indergarh; Manoj Singh of Rajjiwala, Jugraj Singh of Chowkiman (Ludhiana) and Rajinder Singh of Dharamkot had reportedly paid Rs 90 lakh to the main travel agent, Om Parkash, for going to Canada,” the ASI said.
After a preliminary inquiry into the allegations, the police have registered a case of fraud against Om Parkash, Meenakshi, Vaibhav Sharma and Sohan Lal under various sections of the IPC at Dharamkot police station, the police official said, adding that further investigation is on.
