Fisheries students of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary College and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), who are striking against unemployment for the past four days, began 'hunger strike' on Friday.
The students are protesting against the Punjab government and GADVASU authorities for failing to get them jobs in the fisheries department of the state.
Meanwhile, HS Phoolka of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who recently contested the Lok Sabha elections, met the students and assured them of getting them placed.
The students shared with Phoolka how they ran from pillar to post to get their plight addressed. They said, "About 50 posts are lying vacant in the department of fisheries and despite that Punjab government is unconcerned about employing us."
In response, Phoolka said it was sad to see students protesting for jobs despite attaining formal education that too from a government-run university.
However, on the other hand, GADVASU public relations officer Harpreet Singh said, "Each year, the deserving students are getting proper placements in both private and government sectors. Students on strike should not forget that all their professors, registrar and the vice-chancellor are leaving no stone unturned to solve the unemployment issue. CM of the state has suggested them to be self-employed, assuring them of subsidies."
Later, district BJP president Praveen Bansal also arrived to listen to the students' grievances. He also assured them of support. Both Bansal and Phoolka were given memorandums by the students.
