Social organisations led by the Punjab Istri Sabha took out a protest march and staged a demonstration outside the A division police station in protest against the failure of the police to nab the accused who had raped a 20-year-old woman in a moving car last Monday.

Referring to the case of thrashing of a girl student of GNDU and her family by eve-teasers, the protesters said women were not safe in Amritsar.

Balwinder Singh, district secretary of the CPI, said, "It is shameful that such incidents are happening openly on the streets of Amritsar. More shocking is the fact that the Amritsar police have not made any arrests even five days after the gangrape. We burnt effigies of the state government and the police administration to make them realise that security of women in Amritsar is a matter of serious concern now."

Punjab Istri Sabha chief Narinder Pal Kaur said, "The situation is going from bad to worse. A girl coming from a tuition class is teased and later when she confronts the boys, she is thrashed and her family is attacked. Police must arrest the accused as soon as possible."

Congress warns of protest
Slamming the police for the rise in crimes against women, Congress leader Karamjit Singh Rintu, who went to hospital to meet the girl who was attacked by eve-teasers, said, "If the Amritsar police fail to make any arrests till Saturday, we will stage a protest. It is a wake-up call for the Punjab government as far as the law and order situation is concerned."
