Residents of Urban Estate-1 are a worried lot over the burning of garbage in their locality in the dead of the night, by some unidentified miscreants.
This unauthorised burning has brought new diseases like asthma into the residents' lives. It has also forced them to bear with the stink of burning plastic and smoke entering their homes through ACs and coolers.
Even at 8 am on Sunday, the HT team could smell the stink of burning garbage.
Inderjot Singh, a resident said, "Our life has become unbearable, due to the burning of garbage by unidentified miscreants during the dead of the night."
"Foul smell and thick smoke have started affecting the health of our children, as they have started complaining of uneasiness," said Singh.
Singh added that a delegation from the area had met MC commissioner last year and requested that garbage dump be removed from the area, to no avail.
"I will complain to Punjab Pollution Control Board against MC for failing to take any action on our complaint." Another resident, Prabhjot Singh said, "Sometimes, we are forced to leave our home and go to our relatives' houses in the city."
Bobby Anand, another resident, claimed that it were the sanitation workers, who burnt the garbage due to overloading in their refuse vans.

{{/usCountry}}MC commissioner Vinay Bublani, "We are monitoring these incidents and strict guidelines have been issued to sanitation workers not to burn garbage."
He said that sometimes, some people burn garbage. He said that challans would now be issued for burning garbage.
Talking to HT, senior environmental engineer of Punjab Pollution Control Board SP Garg said, "The board will direct the Jalandhar MC to stop such practice and to remove garbage on a daily basis."
