Garbage piles up as MC workers’ strike lingers on

On Thursday, the protestors were summoned to cabinet minister Anil Joshi’s camp office to discuss the issues in the presence of municipal commissioner and joint commissioner. However, the meeting failed to resolve the issue and rescheduled for Friday.

The city was far from clean when the garbage was being lifted on daily basis and now, with the sanitation workers on strike, the conditions have worsened as garbage heaps have taken shape mountains. The city generates roughly 600 metric tonnes of garbage daily.

Not only cleanliness work, other areas coming under the civic body’s purview are hard hit as employees have joined the protesters. The protestors are demanding inclusion of revised pay commission, filling up of vacant posts and regularising workers of the sewerage department.

“We have called them for a meeting and are listening to their demands. Our aim is to try and resolve the fracas to bring the working of the MC back on track,” said joint commissioner Surinder Singh, who was present in the meeting.
