Girls' hostel stone laid at tech college

The foundation stone of a new girls' hostel worth Rs 5.50 crore was laid on Saturday at Shaheed Bhagat Singh State Technical Campus, a Punjab government institute here. Minister of technical education and industrial training Anil Joshi performed the ceremony, and inaugurated two more buildings.

The intake of girls in the college has increased from 350 to 1,250, since new courses such as Bachelor of Technology (civil engineering); Master of Business Administration (MBA); Master of Computer Applications (MCA); five-year Master of Technology; three-year diplomas; Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA), and Bachelor of Science (information technology) were introduced, campus director TS Sidhu has said.

More than 50 students were in the doctorate programme on the campus in different branches of engineering. The union ministry of human resource development has chosen the college to receive Rs 10 crore as grant under the technical education quality improvement programme. The All-India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) has given it another Rs 75 lakh for new equipment.

At the stone laying ceremony on Saturday, the campus director thanked the Punjab government for supporting the cause of development in this border and backward belt of the state by building a polytechnic a science school for Rs 7.70 crore. He also highlighted some long-pending demands that include the upgrade of the college to technical university.

"For creating employment, the government was trying to upgrade the job skills of young people of the state," said technical education minister Joshi. Dinesh Lakra, chairman of the college board of governors, also addressed the gathering.
