The incident took place at around 6:30 pm, when Preeti, who was coming to her rented accommodation, was attacked by an accused and her neck was slit with a sharp-edged weapon. She was rushed to the nearby hospital, where she died.

The attack was so brutal that blood was scattered all over the road.

Preeti, who was in her twenties, was a student of the Physics department of the university and had returned from her hometown Dinanagar in Gurdaspur district on Wednesday, said police.

Police are working to get clues of the incident, but were yet to identify the accused. A police party led by DCP, Amritsar, Satpal Joshi visited the house where Preeti lived and talked to other girls there. She was living in a house where few other girls also stayed on rent.

Police were looking for various clues to crack the murder case.

Talking to Hindustan Times, DCP Satpal Joshi said, "The neck of girl was slit and she died in hospital. We are looking for clues and investigation will only reveal about the suspects and the reason behind the murder. We are talking to her friends and others to know details. She had come back from home today only."
