The admission will be done on the basis of merit of the Class-12 non-medical examinations.

Prof RS Kaler, head of the department, said skilled professionals of sugar and alcohol were in great demand to meet the growing demands of ethanol as a bio-fuel.

While talking about the placement opportunities, he said the students of the department were not only placed in sugar industries of Punjab, Haryana, western UP and Karnataka, but also in distilleries, breweries and wineries.

The department has achieved international standards with Prof Satindar Kaur having been appointed referee of the International Commission of Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis (ICUMSA). She is also visiting Cambridge University in July to attend the 28th ICUMSA meet.

He said the department also offered B Tech in food technology, M Sc food technology and PhD programmes. Further information could be accessed from the university website www.gndu.ac.in.
