The National Scheduled Castes Alliance (NSCA) held the Punjab government authorities' lackadaisical attitude responsible for spread of dengue in the state.
President of the NSCA Paramjit Singh Kainth alleged that government hospitals, experts at the offices of chief medical officers (CMO) and health wings of municipal corporations were doing nothing worth to contain the dengue cases that had reached to an epidemic level.
Kainth added that aedes mosquitoes that carry dengue parasite to human body did not breed in stagnant dirty water at public places.
“Thus, fogging carried out in cities were initiated out of ignorance, since dengue is spread through clean water and not through dirty, stagnated water,” he said.
The only campaign that could have been effective was sensitising people to keep their houses clean, said Kainth, adding that the people should clean and dry their coolers after the summer months.
“The dengue larvae also breed in empty flower pots, bottles, plastic containers and any such article that carries clean water. Thus, the actual fight against dengue has to be taken up by the people from their homes,” he added.
The government health agencies should spread awareness among masses through ad campaigns, he further said.
“So far 954 cases of dengue have been reported in Punjab. Around 500 cases reported by the end of monsoon. Ludhiana leads with 243 cases followed by Patiala 225,” he added.
