Worried over the rise in theft cases in temples in the state, Om Parkash, zila parishad member of Bershaini ward in Kullu district, urged the government to bring the Raghunath temple in Kullu, whuch he described as the region's "cultural and religious heritage", under state patronage to ensure its security in the future.
Taking a dig at Maheshavar Singh, who is the chief caretaker of the temple, he said: "Residents of the district are deeply associated with the Kullu Dussehra deities whose idols have been installed in the Raghunath temple. Last December thieves broke into the temple and decamped with several antique idols, causing great concern among area residents."
Parkash alleged that due to lack of security arrangements thieves were able to plunder the Raghunath temple twice within a short period. "This is a matter of concern because the antique idols are our rich cultural and religious heritage, which should be protected at every cost. We'll launch a campaign to persuade residents of the district to urge the state government to take the temple under its patronage to provide adequate security arrangements for its protection. This can avert such incidents in the future," he added.
"Earlier many temples in the state were run by individuals, where robbers successes to plunder them but when state government took them under its control, there after these temples get adequate security and transparency, which is necessary to protect our rich culture and religious heritage" Parkash said.
