The police on Tuesday arrested a man they claimed had hammered a woman to death after robbing her of gold ornaments and Rs 15,000 cash at her Babbehali farmhouse near here on September 22.
The arrested man, Sikander Singh, is from the victim's village. "He is a truck operator and a close relative of the woman he killed," senior superintendent of police Gurpreet Singh Toor on Tuesday told the media here, adding that the man was addicted to smack and on the day of the crime as well had been under the influence of the drug.
The victim, Sarabjit Kaur, 40, was attacked when her husband was at work in the government school of Dhariwal Khichian village, and her two sons were away to school. She was first struck with a pair of scissors.
The farmhouse, 100 metres outside the village, is isolated.On the statement of the victim's husband, the police had registered a case at Tibber.
The accused is son of a cousin of complainant Harvinder Singh. Sikander Singh was arrested from his house at Babbehali on Tuesday morning and the police claim to have recovered a stolen gold chain and earrings of the victim. Superintendent of police (detective) JS Kainth led the special investigation team that caught the man.
