It is said that roads reflect the true picture of the development of a town. A developed town is supposed to have good roads while the broken roads loudly speak of the inefficient local administration. Unfortunately, Gurdaspur could be included in the list of poorly-administrated towns as far as the condition of the roads is concerned.

The Grand Trunk (GT) road, which is also called Sher Shah Suri Marg for it was built by emperor Sher Shah Suri during his regime, runs through Gurdaspur. It supports all sorts of light and heavy vehicular traffic in a large number round-the-clock.Now, it has become a part of the national highway.

This road may be called the lifeline of the Gurdaspur town for it witnesses all sorts of activities of all the sections of local society. This road has big potholes scattered all over its stretch in Gurdaspur. The most pathetic sight of the road can be seen across the Railway Crossing towards Pathankot side.

Sources revealed that this patch of road had not been repaired for the last over one-and-a-half years. The drivers using this road for the first time have a great difficulty in crossing this patch of road.

The road dividing the entrance of the district judicial courts complex and the back side of the office of the senior superintendent of police (SSP) in Gurdaspur entertains a permanent big pool of water making it difficult for the road users to assess where the metallic road existed. These broken roads cause several accidents, sometimes even fatal, leading to the loss of life and causing damage to the vehicles.

When contacted, Gurdaspur PWD sub-divisional engineer Harjinder Singh said, "The department is aware of the bad condition of the roads in Gurdaspur. We are waiting for funds to begin the repair".
