Motivated by their parents, Harshveer Goyal and Dipti, both from Sangrur district, have topped the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) Class-10 examinations. Both secured 627 marks out of 650 for a pass percentage of 96.46%.
Belonging to Moonak town, Harshveer (16), a student of Shiksha Niketan, owes his excellent performance to his parents, who are teachers. The latter provided him with study material and avoided tuitions.
Harshveer's father Harikesh Goyal said the boy was keen to acquire knowledge of various subjects.
"I used to study for 10 hours daily," said Harshveer, who aspires to do engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). "Besides my parents, my teachers also guided me," he added.
Principal Rakesh Kumar Garg said Harsh had been a student of the school since Class 1. "We were sure that he would make it to the merit list, but his top position is a pleasant surprise," he said.
Meanwhile, Dipti (16), a Sunam girl, also gave credit to her parents for her superb show. A student of Model Basic High School, Sunam, 15km from here, Dipti said she used to study for six to seven hours a day.

{{/usCountry}}Her father Madhu Sudhan said she had always been a brilliant, hard-working student. "We used to ask her to go for tuitions, but she refused and preferred self-study," he said.
Principal Rajesh Kumar said Dipti's dedication would inspire students not only in Sangrur district but also across the state.
