Union food processing minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, on Sunday, met families of the victims of the Kullu bus tragedy in Joga, Makha Chahlan and Aklia village here.
Both leaders expressed sympathy with the aggrieved families and said that the government was with them in their grief. "Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has already announced 1 lakh compensation to the next of the kin of the deceased and the injured are being treated free of cost at the state hospitals," said Sukhbir Badal.
However, the Joga Nagar panchayat expressed disappointment over the meager compensation announced by the state government. "It is highly disappointing that such a meagre amount has been announced by the state government as most of the victims were lone bread-earners of their families," said Gurmeet Singh, vice-president of the nagar panchayat of Joga.
Gurmeet Singh said that out of the 12 passengers from Joga, 10 are still untraced and a bhog ceremony for them will be held within the next ten days if the situation remains the same.
Meanwhile, People's Party of Punjab (PPP) leader Manpreet Singh Badal, who too visited Joga village, criticised the state government for announcing a 'paltry' amount of Rs 1lakh for the accident victims. "I appeal to the CM and deputy CM to stop spending too much on their cavalcade and rather announce a higher compensation amount for the victims."
