The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) – the students’ wing of the Congress – in Haryana would go ahead with the college and district units elections by next month and it may later hold a fresh membership drive in eight districts of the state where it had failed to enroll even a single member in its recent drive.
NSUI national secretary and Haryana in-charge Amit Singh, who admitted that he was aware of the zero enrollment in some districts of Haryana, told HT that the membership drive was fair and no one forced any student to be a member in all the 21 districts of the state. The drive, which is undertaken after every about two years was held from January 2015 till mid-February, 2015.
“Whatever might have been the reasons behind the failure of enrollment of the members in some districts, we would hold the college and district units elections from among the new members in the next fortnight or two and later on discuss the issue of whether to hold membership drive in the said eight district or not at state and national level leadership,” he said.
Singh’s reaction notwithstanding, several NSUI leaders, who did not want to be named, however, expressed their shock over the nil membership in eight districts, which included Hisar and Sirsa, the hubs of the student politics. The six other districts with zero members are Mahendergarh, Jind, Panchkula, Fatehabad, Kaithal and Bhiwani. Another district which is also such a hub is Kurukshetra where the enrollment has been a poor 830-something.

The NSUI however, enrolled about 4,900 in Rohtak, 376 in Sonepat, 1,900 in Panipat, 509 in Mewat, 2,500 in Jhajjar, 5,500 in Faridabad, 809 in Rewari, 590 in Palwal, 6,000 in Ambala, 6,100 in Gurgaon and about 660 in Karnal. Interestingly Yamunanagar got maximum enrollment of about 12,800.
Several former NSUI leaders from the district with zero members held that it was a shocker to NSUI leadership too, as in Haryana Congress had ruled for 10 years till recently and still had 15 MLAs.
Sirsa, from where state party president was MP, too had zero membership this time.
