Due to the alleged lackadaisical attitude of the health authorities, hawkers and fruit sellers have been selling unhygienic food and overripe fruits in the city, putting the health of many at risk.
Health authorities have made claims of being well prepared to tackle vector-borne diseases. However, a survey of the city showed that the vendors in the interior areas of the walled city and commercial hub Leela Bhawan are using contaminated water for cooking.
Chief medical officer Dr Virinder Mohi said, "According to the law, challans are to be issued to hawkers and vendors who sell overripe fruits and unhygienic food."
Mohi said the department had been collecting food samples regularly. He said, "We are taking the required action. However, keeping a tab on vendors is difficult as they keep moving from one place to another. They do not have any permanent location and ID cards."
Samandeep Singh, a daily commuter, said, "The meat shops and food stalls lead to vector-borne diseases as the water is used from unclean drums, stored for days which turns into a breeding ground for mosquitoes and flies."
Kirandeep, a resident of Leela Bhawan, said, "Even in posh areas of the city the vendors are selling unhygienic food. Why does it take so long for the authorities to get cracking?"
