The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) is set to witness a shake-up, with Congress Working Committee member and Punjab Congress affairs incharge Gulchain Singh Charak on Thursday announcing not to spare anyone responsible for the party’s defeat in the recent assembly elections.
Even as former MLAs Sukhpal Singh Khaira, Avtar Singh Brar and Gurdaspur MP Partap Singh Bajwa have demanded PPCC chief Capt Amarinder Singh’s resignation on moral grounds, Charak, in a press note issued here, said the reasons behind the failure of tireless efforts made by the party cadre during the polls were being looked into at the highest level within the party, while “those responsible for the defeat would not be spared”.
“The party structure will shortly be revamped to meet the role of the responsible opposition both inside and outside the Vidhan Sabha,” he said. Charak advised Congressmen to maintain peace and harmony in the state and jointly rise to the occasion to address public issues in an emphatic way.
“The Congress has suffered reverses in the past too, but has bounced back re-energised. The defeat may prove a blessing in disguise, as it will enable us to look into shortcomings to meet expectations of the people,” he added.

{{/usCountry}}On the poll results, Charak, in his first reaction after the party’s defeat, termed it a ‘technical’ victory for the SAD-BJP alliance while maintaining that the people’s mandate was in no uncertain terms an anti-incumbency verdict.
Brahm Mohindra, Jakhar in race
Sources said the race for the post of Congress legislature party leader was already on among Brahm Mohindra and Sunil Jakhar. “Mohindra, a five-time MLA, is the front-runner as the Congress is seriously considering wooing back its Hindu vote bank.
Jakhar, a two-time MLA, is being supported by the Amarinder camp,” sources said, adding that Mohindra, backed by the anti-Amarinder lobby in the Congress, had been projecting Jakhar as a Jat candidate.
