The health department is going to launch an extensive campaign to check dairy products, beginning October 15.
As the festival season is about to begin, the health department is all set to check the menace of adulterated and substandard sweets.
Dr Jasbir Singh, district health officer, said, "We are organising a special Diwali campaign drive from October 15 against the sale and preparation of poor quality sweets and other food items."
"We would not only keep a check on small sweetshops, but will also check big names on the list of shops in the region. We will educate them to take certain precautions while preparing a large amount of sweets," he said.
Dr Singh added that the department had also asked the civil defence society volunteers to join hands for the campaign.
"We will focus on three most important dairy products, khoya, milk and paneer, as these are the major ingredients used to make sweets," Singh said.
Meanwhile, a joint team of the Punjab police and health department and the food and civil supply department unearthed a fake desi ghee manufacturing factory running from the rented premises on the Ladhewali road on Tuesday.
The authorities conducted a raid on Deod Sidh Milk Food Pvt Ltd and seized three quintals of spurious desi ghee from the unit, which was running under the name of Uttarakhand-based desi ghee factory with "Balak" brand ghee. The police sealed the factory and arrested the owner, Ravinder Kumar.

"The owner has installed a machine for mixing desi ghee, dalda ghee, refined oil and desi ghee flavoured chemical to convert it into desi ghee. The department has sent the samples to Chandigarh for testing," he said.
The team found 1-kg packing and small plastic pouches containing ghee apart from cartons during the search.
Besides, samples of sauce, curd and golgappa paani from the famous joint of tikki chaat, Bittu Pardesi, were also taken and sent to Chandigarh for testing.
