Heavy snowfall in upper Himachal, Shimla too wakes up to snowy morning

The snowfall which started in the early morning paralysed life at number of places, including Shimla and disrupted vehicular movement on local roads and on the Hindustan Tibet National Highway.

Shimla on Sunday woke up to snowy morning while the upper reaches of the state experienced heavy snowfall.

The snowfall, which started in the early morning, paralysed life at number of places, including Shimla and disrupted vehicular movement on local roads and on the Hindustan Tibet National Highway.

The vehicular traffic to upper Shimla region, including Kufri, Fagu, Theog, Narkanda, Chopal, Jubbal-Kotkhai and Rohru has been suspended. Vehicular traffic was also disrupted in Shimla, forcing the residents to walk long distances.

Snowfall in Shimla has affected the supply of milk and bread causing heavy inconvenience to the residents. Due to lightning and heavy snow, power supply is disrupted in upper Shimla region, Kinnaur high altitude areas of Sirmaur districts.

There was intermittent power supply in Shimla town since Saturday evening. In Shimla, snowfall started in early morning while Kufri, Narkanda, Fagu, Kharapathar have been receiving intermittent snowfall since Saturday.

Yesterday, around 800 tourists were stranded at Rohtang Pass, who were evacuated till midnight. Rescue operation was on till 2 am. However, snowfall still continued at Manali, Rohtang and Keylong. Manali received 40 cm of snow, Keylong 16 cm. Kalpa of tribal Kinnaur district received 35 cm of snow, while scenic Sangla valley experienced 40 cm of snowfall. In manali, snowfall paralysed life completely.

"There are around 7-8 vehicles stranded due to snow clad road in Kufri," said Shimla ASP BD Negi., adding none of tourists have been stranded at Kufri and other places in Shimla district

Mercury has come down by few notches in most of the places. In Shimla, minimum temperature was recorded at 3 degree Celsius, in Manali 1.5 degree Celsius.
