A women social activist group - Janwadi Mahila Samiti (JMS) - on Friday held the police responsible for the killing of a Hassi girl, who is suspected to be killed for honour.
The girl, identified as 20-year-old Sonia, was found dead at her house at Dhana Kalan village in Hansi subdivision of the district on Wednesday after which her family cremated the body without conducting post-mortem.
Police sources said Sonia had gone missing on May 9 after which her family had lodged a missing complaint. Sources said the girl had allegedly eloped with her boyfriend, also of the same village. Later, the police traced her to Gurgaon and she was reunited with the family.
"The police are well versed with the fate of girl in such cases and still they returned the girl to the family. They are also responsible for her killing," said JMS president Shakuntala Jhakhar.
Jhakhar and other members of the group submitted a memorandum to the Hisar Superintendent of Police (SP) demanding probe into the case.
Assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Hansi, Jashandeep Singh said, "Everything was done as per law. The police traced the girl to Gurgaon and brought her back to Hasi to be presented in a magistrate's court. The girl said she ran away from the house as she didn't perform well in her graduation exams. It was on her wish that she was reunited with her family," the ASP said.
