The death toll in the luxury bus accident that took place in Garhshankar on Saturday rose to four with another woman, Kirti, succumbing to injuries at a multi-specialty hospital in SAS Nagar on Sunday morning.

The Pathankot resident had fractured both her legs besides sustaining multiple injuries. The police have confirmed her death.

Three passengers — two students and the bus driver — had died on the spot when the Pathankot-bound Mercedes Benz bus crashed into a tree near Panam village on the Garhshankar-Chandigarh road. On the statement of one of the passengers, the Garhshankar police have registered a case of negligent driving against the driver, Sajjan Singh, of the bus that belongs to Taj Travel Company Bathinda.

Local MLA and SGPC member Surinder Singh Bhulewal Rathan said the kin of the accident victims would be compensated as per government norms. "I will ensure that the injured also get maximum medical reimbursement,” he said.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that the same bus (PB 03 Y 8300) was challaned for over-speeding on the Hoshiarpur-Dasuya road about a month ago. The police officer who impounded the bus that reportedly belonged to the politicians from the ruling party, was assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Dhruv Dahiya who had challaned the vehicle of a judicial officer in Ludhiana for wrong parking.
