The sit-in was lifted after the police arrested three of the accused and deployed security guards at the hospital.

Senior medical officer Satpal Banga said on Sunday night some outsiders who had come to meet a patient misbehaved with a girl admitted in the female ward.

On her complaint, Dr Parminder Singh reprimanded them following which one of the miscreants allegedly tried to hit him with a sharp-edged weapon.

"The medical officer had a narrow escape but he and other staff members had to lock themselves up to escape the attack," the senior medical officer said.

He said the girl patient and her mother too had to hide in the hospital compound. Such things were common but the authorities concerned never took it seriously, he rued. "No doctor or paramedical staff wants to work in this hospital due to security concerns," he added.
