The parents of Amol Singh, who was beaten up by ABVP activists at University of Hyderabad on Sunday, have no plans to call their son back. The family said Amol was attacked as he was seeking justice for Rohith Vemula’s family and speaking against elements who wanted to muzzle democratic voices.
“Amol has to stay back and continue his fight for secularism and democratic rights,” said Amol’s father Jagmohan Singh, who is general secretary of Bhratiya Kisan Union (Dakunda).
Amol was beaten up by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists, who reportedly mistook him to be a Kashmiri.
Jagmohan, however, said the attack on his son was not the result of a mistaken identity but a planned move to suppress democratic voices. “Even if he was mistaken for a Kashmir, it’s a condemnable act,” Jagmohan said. Amol, who is pursuing MPhil, was attacked Sunday late night when he was on his way back after participating in a discussion on the Kashmir issue and after paying homage to Rohith Vemula, who had committed suicide on the campus in January.
Amol is a member of the joint action committee that has been demanding action against those who forced Vemula to take his own life.

{{/usCountry}}He was even arrested and jailed for protesting against the university authorities after Vemula committed suicide.
“When I asked him whether I should come to meet him, he said everything was fine and he could handle the situation. He is tough and we have faith in the judiciary,” said Jagmohan.
Amol’s mother, Charan Kaur, who is a clerk at a post office, is concerned about her son’s safety, but she, too, wants her son to fight injustice.
