The Congress has accused chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, his deputy Sukhbir Badal and revenue minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia of adopting double standards when it comes to the performance of Central paramilitary forces.
"On one hand, the troika leaves no opportunity to criticise the paramilitary forces such as the Border Security Force (BSF) for their failure to control smuggling of drugs through international borders and, on the other, they want the same paramilitary forces such as the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to guard them," Congress spokesperson Sukhpal Khaira said here on Thursday.
"Their approach not only amounts to dichotomy but also exhibits double standards. It means that the troika has no faith in the Punjab Police when it comes to their own security. If paramilitary forces are inefficient, why are they seeking their services for protection?" Khaira asked.
On the issue of drugs, he said: "It is not only drugs smuggled through international borders that are playing havoc with the youth of Punjab but also locally distributed cheap drugs such as smack, opium, poppy husk, morphine injections, tablets, syrups and synthetic drugs."
Former director general of police (DGP) Shashi Kant had disclosed that 10 high-profile politicians and 185 officials were part of the nexus that runs the drugs trade in the state, Khaira said. "Instead of taking action against the nexus of politicians, police and drug mafia, the powerful and arrogant troika of the chief minister, his deputy and Majithia want to pass the buck on the paramilitary forces for their failure to curb the drug smuggling."
