Sanjay Kumar Chaudhary (44), a native of Bihar, jumped in front of the bus after he was produced in the district courts here and was being taken back to Mandi sub-jail on foot. The two places happen to be at a close distance.

Police said that Sanjay was arrested by Sundernagar police on January 7. He was allegedly found to be in possession of 2.1-kg charas worth Rs 2 lakh kilo when he was checked by the police at Pungh near Sundernagar.

On Thursday, Sanjay, who was accompanied by a policeman and homeguard volunteer, suddenly threw himself in front of the rear tyres of the bus that was headed for Rewalsar from Mandi. Eyewitnesses said that Sanjay's head was crushed under the tyres of the bus and he died on the spot.

Police said that Sanjay was a law graduate and was facing charges under Section 20 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act. Police have sent his body for the post-mortem and informed his relatives.
