Alleging that he got no help from the Indian embassy in Iraq, a youth of Jattan Uccha village here who came back from war-hit Iraq on Saturday said that his employer helped him buy the tickets in lieu of his two months’ salary.
“I have not got any help from the Indian embassy in Iraq and I came back when my employer provided me a ticket,” said Sarabjeet Singh.
Contrary to the government’s claim of helping the stranded Indians, Singh said that the company he worked for deducted his two months’ salary and bought him a ticket to go back.
He said when he reached the Delhi airport, a special desk had been set up where officials asked him to give his details.
Saying that he hired a taxi by himself to reach home, he claimed no assistance was being provided to youths returning from Iraq.
Recounting his experience, Singh said that he, along with other employees, was asked to live in a company-provided accommodation, 10 km away their office. He was picked up and dropped back and food was also provided. However, he said, they were not permitted to go out on their own.
Mangla, Singh’s mother, said no officials had visited them and her son had to arrange everything by himself.Singh also said that many Indian youths were still stranded there as their passports had been seized by their employers.
