IT sleuths raid liquor godowns

The sleuths of the income tax department on Tuesday raided liquor godowns owned by groups linked to Akali MLA Deep Malhotra and UW Enterprises.

The sleuths of the income tax department on Tuesday raided liquor godowns owned by groups linked to Akali MLA Deep Malhotra and UW Enterprises.

The investigation wing of I-T department also raided Jagatjit Industries, a distillery, in Hamira village of Kapurthala district.

I-T department officials said their main focus was on the stores of liquor contractors and collecting information about their account statements, sale, purchase, stock or any other transaction.

Reports said a 10-member team carried a raid at the store of Gautam Wines, a group owned by Faridkot MLA Deep Malhotra, and UW Enterprises' godown near Workshop Chowk in the city.

The team arrived at the godowns around 11 am while another team arrived at Jagatjit Industries at 6 am. The officials took control of offices.

The I-T officials were busy checking records of these companies till the filling of this report.

Sanjeev Kaushal, joint director (investigation wing), income tax department, said, "We have received complaints of tax evasion by these companies and hence raids were conducted in Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Mohali and Patiala."

The companies which were raided on Tuesday in the district control most of the liquor vends auctioned on March 22.
