Robbers decamped with Rs 8.25 lakh after breaking open an automated teller machine (ATM) of Allahabad Bank at the Urban Estate phase-II locality here on Saturday.
It’s the eighth ATM robbery in the past 10 months in areas under the Jalandhar police commissionerate’s jurisdiction. In most cases, cops have failed to make any headway.
On Wednesday, robbers had decamped with Rs 3.83 lakh after uprooting a Tata Indicash ATM at an unguarded kiosk in Dhami Nagar market on the Mithapur road.
The incident came to light at 9.15 am when a security guard, identified as Ranjeet Singh, found the machine badly damaged, said bank’s senior manager Mukhtiyar Singh.
The guard called up police who rushed to the spot. The bank’s main gate and ATM’s shutter were closed as two cops, including station house officer Navdeep Singh, scanned the CCTV footages of kiosk along with the senior manager.
The bank manager said they have deployed three guards who come in shifts. While Ranjeet Singh guards the ATM from 6 am to 2 om, Prem Nath and Som Nath are present from 2 pm to 10 pm and 10 pm to 6 am, respectively.
The manager said Ranjeet had informed him that he would come late by two hours on Saturday as his son was admitted to a hospital.
