Soon after the swearing-in of Captain Amarinder Singh to lead a new Punjab government on Thursday, Karan Avtar Singh assumed charge as chief secretary of the state. He will also be principal secretary, department of personnel, general administration and vigilance; and principal secretary, investment promotion.

Outgoing chief secretary Sarvesh Kaushal has been appointed special chief secretary-cum-director general, Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration. The government also transferred 12 other IAS officers at the state level with immediate effect, and gave new deputy commissioners to 18 districts. Besides at the principal secretary level and above, the government posted Kamal Kishor Yadav as director, local government, and Arshdeep Singh Thind as managing director, Markfed.
