Taking everyone by surprise, Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Thursday made senior members of his party, officials of the district administration and general public to take a pledge against corruption at a public interaction programme in Kalka.
Khattar, who started his address with the promise of providing corruption-free and good governance, asked Bharatiya Janata Party leaders including state president Subhash Barala, member of parliament Ratan Lal Kataria, Kalka MLA Latika Sharma, Panchkula MLA Gian Chand Gupta and senior leader Professor Ganeshi Lal to take pledge against corrupt practices.
Then he called deputy commissioner (DC), Panchkula, Vivek Atray and deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Hamid Akhtar to the dais and asked them to take the same pledge.
Khattar said his government is committed to breaking the politician-officer-employees nexus. "We are first making an appeal to everyone to refrain from corruption. If people continue to indulge in malpractices, we have the law to tackle them," said Khattar.
Taking a dig at previous Congress government, Khattar said that they ensured the welfare of their relatives and friends only and promoted regional bias and lopsided development.
Referring to statements made by the opposition about BJP's implementation of its manifesto, he said that people had given the mandate to BJP for 1,826 days (five years) and it had just completed 165 days. "They do not have right to comment on our functioning as lot of efforts need to be put in to repair the damage caused by them before moving ahead," he said.
