The owner couple of the National Kidney Hospital on Wednesday applied for anticipatory bail in a local court in the kidney racket the city police claimed to have busted about a month ago.
The police had booked Dr Rajesh Aggarwal and his wife Dr Deepa Aggarwal on Monday evening under sections 18, 19 and 20 of the Human Organs Transplantation (Amendment) Act, 2011.
Hearing in the case will come up on Thursday. If the couple does not get bail, they will be arrested after 7pm with the end of handing over notice to them three days ago. On Wednesday, members of the special investigation team (SIT) interrogated the hospital staff, including doctors, to get some lead in the case.
The SIT seized records on transplant surgeries to see whether the hospital has been following all procedures and rules. Meanwhile, hearing of the jailed accused Sadhna, the hospital coordinator, was done through videoconferencing.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP headquarters) and SIT spokesperson Alka Meena did not respond to repeated calls on her mobile phone.
On July 31, Junaid Ahmed Khan, Vardan Chandar, Kuldeep and Saboor were arrested from Baaz Celebration Hotel for their involvement in the racket. On August 1, Harwinder Singh, a helper at Sunder Labs, was also arrested. Harwinder allegedly used to change blood samples to match the DNA sample reports of donors and recipients.
