The proposal by local member of Parliament Kirron Kher for starting MBBS course at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has hit the roadblock. It is not going to be discussed in the upcoming meeting of the governing body of the institute next month as it is not part of the agenda of the meeting.
The proposal is being opposed by the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research faculty from the very beginning but the latest blow to the move came Prof K Gauba, professor in-charge (academic section), who informed the faculty that “no such agenda is going to be placed in the forthcoming meeting of the governing body of the institute.”
He was referring to some recent news reports in which it was claimed that the matter would be taken up in governing body meeting slated for October 13.
Acting on representations, Kirron Kher had been perusing the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research administration to start the MBBS course.
She even had written to union health minister JP Nadda to start the course at the institute.
But the institute doctors are not taking it very kindly. The faculty of the institute has already opposed the starting of MBBS. The Staff Council — which comprises all the professors as members — had also opposed the move, saying any move in this regard would defeat institute’s original mandate of producing medical teachers for the country.

In 2010, the then union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had also proposed to start the MBBS course.
But the idea was out rightly rejected at every level, including by the governing body.
