Kotkapura youth booked in drugs case dies seven days after arrest

The Kotkapura police had arrested him on June 10 during a checking near the grain market and claimed to have seized about 250 intoxicant tablets without any brand name. A case was registered against him under at the city police station, Kotkapura.

He was reportedly a medical practitioner at Kotkapura. He is survived by an 18-year-old son, a 15-year-old daughter and wife. His wife is state to be a cancer patient.

Sources alleged that the accused was a drug addict and died as he could not consume the same in the jail, but Kulwinder Singh Thiara, superintendent of the modern jail, denying it said, "He was mentally disturbed and depressed when sent in judicial custody on June 11. So we had sent him to the civil hospital on June 15," he said.

In the modern jail here, the number of addicted people admitted to the jail de-addiction centreis nearly three times of the usual 20 to 25.
