In yet another example of a project proposed by the municipal corporation (MC) getting delayed, the diary complexes of Haibowal on Hambran Road have not seen any development for the past several years nor have they been shifted.
The MC had proposed to shift the dairy complexes to another place, but the process is hanging fire. On the other hand, ignoring the development of present dairy complexes, the spaces reserved to build parks are being used to collect cow dung for the past many years.
Lack of sanitation and blockage in open drainage system are main problems besides non-availability of street lights at some places.
Heaps of cows dung are commonly seen on roads, which are linked with nearby residential areas. According to area councillor Maharaj Singh, the MC had proposed to shift the dairies at other place, but no steps were taken and neither attention was paid on development of diary complexes. The councillor blamed the state government for no development of the dairy complexes.
A visit to the area revealed that the people in residential colonies nearby these dairy complexes were suffering due to bad sanitation conditions under which the milk was obtained and supplied to various parts of the district.
Requesting anonymity, a dairy owner said, "There is space for 10-12 parks in the dairy complexes area, but we have not seen any park here. It is the responsibility of the MC to make development but they never paid attention. The project of development of dairy complexes is also hanging fire."
The dairies of some politicians are also situated in these dairy complexes, but still no development has taken place. The residents of nearby colonies claimed that
the dairy owners were equally responsible for poor sanitation conditions in the area.
These dairy complexes are divided into different blocks while one block, which is on Panj Peer road, is opposite to the residential areas, where the residents usually suffer from the sewer blockage and dairy waste that is thrown outside by the dairies.
Ravjit, a student, said, "The MC should ensure proper sanitation in the residential areas as well as in dairy complexes. The foul smell emanating of cow dung on roads always irks us."
Contacted AS Sekhon, head of health and sanitation wing, said they had plans to shift the dairy complexes soon. However, he then transferred the call to health officer Dr Charanjit Uppal, who did not comment on bad sanitation conditions in the dairy complexes.
Dr Uppal suggested that Ashwani Sahota, nodal officer, would give more information, but Sahota said Sekhon could give exact details about the project.
While MC commissioner Shruti Singh said she would look into the matter, as she had recently joined as MC commissioner.
