Applicants seeking a learner’s licence continue to face inconvenience at the test centre located in Children Traffic Park, Model Town.
The centre witnesses a footfall of around 400 every day, but there are no proper seating arrangements. The applicants end up standing while waiting for their turn. Adding to their woes, only three fans have been installed on the premises.
Also, in the absence of adequate number of staff members, it takes a lot of time to clear the rush at the three counters -- one of the counters is for medical examination, another to get the token and the third for the written test. Sushil Kumar, an applicant, said that in the absence of any seating arrangement, he kept standing for two hours before he could sit for the written test.
“I reached the centre at 10am and stood in a queue to get the token. It took me one hour to get it, following which it took me another hour before I could sit for the test,”he said.
Sushil said there should be more seats available at the centre for the convenience of the applicants. “The authorities must also depute more staff at the centre. Presently, only two staff members are present at the token window. Also for the medical examination, there is only one doctor, while for the written test, only 10 applicants are allowed to sit at a time.”
Applicant Harjit Kaur, said, “To get the token for the written test, it took me one hour. There was only one fan installed for around 50 people standing in the queue at the counter. After the test, we were asked to sit in a hall to get the photographs clicked, which took another hour.”

{{/usCountry}}As per rules, applicants get the learning licence by post within 15 days. However, mosapplicants who applied for the licence in the first week of July are still awaiting it. Harleen Kaur, an applicant, said “I applied for the learning licence on July 7. I am yet to receive it.”

District transport officer Anil Kumar Garg said that they were facing a dearth of funds about which they had informed the authorities. “We have asked the higher authorities for funds, so that we can provide more benches at the centre. Further, we are speeding up the process to ensure applicants get their licence within the stipulated time,” he said.
