Kartar Singh Sehamby, district sports officer, Ludhiana, has been appointed as officer on special duty at the Punjab State Sports Department head office in Chandigarh.
The decision was taken in the wake of upcoming Kabaddi World Cup in November.
Sehamby, while confirming his appointment, said, "I have been asked by the sports department to take charge at the head office in Chandigarh as officer on special duty. I joined the office today and will be an active member to perform administrative work for the upcoming 'Kabaddi World Cup."
"However, I have not officially resigned from the post of district sports officer (DSO) as there are some sports events in a week's time. So I will resign from the position after conducting these events."
Secretary state sports department KS Pannu said, "The decision is taken in the wake of the upcoming Kabaddi World Cup scheduled to begin on November29. Sehamby will be part of the administrative work at the head office in Chandigarh while Surjeet Singh has been given temporary additional charge of Ludhiana DSO along with Rupnagar. The decision on permanent filling of the position will be taken once the world cup is over."
On the other hand, sports officials in the district have voiced their concern administration of sports and said giving additional charge of such a large district to another DSO is not viable.
Several academies and associations in the district are already suffering due to the sports department's apathy and the decision might further worsen the situation here, they say.

{{/usCountry}}Tejinder Singh Dhaliwal, director, Punjab Sports Department, said, "The official appointed on special duty will be part of the organising committee for the upcoming World Cup Kabaddi. After the event, he will be appointed at the head office with a separate charge."
