Malaysian rights panel lauds HHRC functioning

A two-member delegation of the human rights commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) met the member of Haryana Human Rights Commission (HHRC), justice HS Bhalla, here on Friday.

A two-member delegation of the human rights commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) met the member of Haryana Human Rights Commission (HHRC), justice HS Bhalla, here on Friday.

Stating that the Malaysian delegation included Hasmah Abdul Manaf and Ameer Izyanif Hamzah, education and promotion officers at Suhakam, an official release said the delegation was led by joint registrar, law and focal point for human rights defender, national human rights commission of India, AK Parashar.

The delegation exchanged information about the working of HHRC and Suhakam while Malaysian delegates praised the functioning of Indian human rights commission and the work of HHRC.

Hamzah said in Malaysia, the commission had no powers to direct police and issue compensation. Their focus was more on creating awareness. He said the Suhakam was divided into three groups, namely education and public relations group, complaints and enquiry group and research and policy development group.
