Police on Thursday claimed to have solved the murder of a 10-year-old boy with the arrest of his uncle. The victim, a native of Bihar, was sodomised before being strangled to death here on Monday. His body was found in his room. A first information report (FIR) had been registered on the basis of the statement of the victim's father.

The accused has been identified as Vijay Mahanda, 32, a resident of Laxminagar here and a native of Bihar.

Jagjit Singh Saroya, superintendent of police (investigation), said Mahanda, an ice-cream vendor, was the boy's roommate. "The child was alone when Mahanda entered the room and committed sodomy," Saroya told the media.

The SP said Mahanda feared that the boy would reveal his crime, so he strangled him to death with an electric wire.

A case had been registered under sections 377 (carnal intercourse against the order of nature) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code at the city police station on May 19.
