Gurmej of Jakopur Khurd village of Lohian, who works as technician in a medical laboratory, allegedly set his wife Palwinder afire on February 25 over a petty issue. As per the police she was clipping the nails of her husband, when by mistake she gave him a minor cut. In a fit of rage, Gurmej allegedly poured kerosene oil on her and ignite the matchstick. Palwinder has received 100% burn injuries, station house officer Manjit Singh told HT.

Earlier, in the presence of a magistrate, Palwinder in her statement had claimed that she received burn injuries accidently when she was cooking food, the SHO said. However, a case was registered against Gurmej after Palwinder's parents complained to the police.

Gurmej is reportedly absconding and efforts were on to arrest him, the SHO added.
