On the statement of his daughter that he had killed his ex-wife on May 27, a man named Shamsher Singh was Wednesday awarded life imprisonment here.

District and sessions judge Sanjeev Berry, who delivered the verdict, he also ordered Shamsher Singh to submit Rs 20,000 as fine, failing which, his jail term would be extended by six months.

The Bassi police had arrested Shamsher Singh on the day of the murder itself, based on the statement of his daughter, Gurpreet Kaur. The complainant had been living with her mother, Parmjeet Kaur, at Bassi Pathana for the past two years. Her mother had divorced Shamsher Singh about 10 years ago.

Gurpreet Kaur had told the police that on court's direction, her father used to come over to give alimony to her mother, and on May 27, he had come to meet them at Bassi Pathana and stayed overnight. She further stated that around 4am, woken up by her mother's shrieking, she had found that her father had attacked his ex-wife with a sharp-edged weapon on the roof and got away.

The court framed the charges on September 2, and after cross-examining all the witnesses, delivered the judgment within 15 days.
