On September 15, the accused had approached the police for registration of a case in connection with the murder of his son Sajan Singh (12) and theft of `7,500 from his house. A case under Sections 302 and 380 of the IPC was registered against unidentified person at Mattewal police station.

Rajbir Singh, SHO, Mattewal police station, said initially Jagtar Singh had alleged that he had gone out with his eldest son while his wife had taken their second son to Tarsikka on the day of the incident. "He had claimed that Sajan Singh was alone at home when the theft took place and he was found dead when the family returned in the evening," said the SHO.

He, however, added that during investigation of the case, the accused confessed that as he was taking `7,500 from the almirah, his youngest son, Sajan Singh, saw him and said he would report the matter to his mother.
